AI Meet Up: AI for Mobility

april 13, 2023 - 3:45 pm - 5:00 pm

Mondai | House of AI is pleased to host the upcoming Meet Up in collaboration with their partner Kickstart.ai!

Mobility, Transport and Logistics

“Significantly decreasing greenhouse gas emissions, reducing the number of traffic casualties and also strengthening the economy: these can all be done in the Netherlands if we raise our mobility, transport and logistics to a higher level using artificial intelligence (AI).
The Netherlands is a small country with a lot of inhabitants and a great deal of economic activity. On top of that, we have Rotterdam as a transhipment port that just about the entire world uses, so we constantly have huge transport flow – by water, road and rail. What that all means is that we have been pushing the limits of our infrastructure in terms of mobility, transport and logistics for a while now.”
– NLAIC: Sector Mobility, Transport and Logistics

Join us for the fifth TU Delft AI Meet Up where we will take a closer look at AI for Mobility. Together with Bob Huisman, Manager Research & Development Logistic Hub for the NS, and Prof. Dr. Mathijs de Weerdt, TU Delft Faculty of EEMCS, who will give insight into how the TU Delft and the NS are working together to improve our mobility.

Algorithmic research and development for train shunting at railway hubs
Algorithms can support important decisions; in this case supporting the preparation of trains such that they can run in the timetable: where to park, when to clean, and which trains to match to which slots in the timetable. When supporting such decisions about the real world, one is confronted with a long list of uncertainties, special constraints, people’s preferences, exceptions, and all other kinds of details. It is not only difficult to get all the relevant information in time, the details that are included also affect which algorithmic techniques are most effective. Finding the best combination of model and algorithm requires expertise on the computational aspects, as well as understanding of what is important in practice. Bob and Mathijs explain how scientists and developers can work together, why this is motivating for both sides, and what is needed to get from ideas to implementation and operation.

Programme
15:45 Doors open
16:00 – 17:00 Keynote speeches by Bob Huisman (NS) and Prof. Dr. Mathijs de Weerdt (TU Delft, EEMCS) on the collaboration efforts of the NS and the TU Delft
17:00 Networking drinks!

Speakers
Mathijs de Weerdt is full professor on Algorithms for Planning and Scheduling and section head of the Algorithmics Group at Delft University of Technology. His main aim is to develop new algorithmic techniques that cope with challenges prohibiting successful use of algorithmic and artificial intelligence planning and optimization techniques in practice. He mainly works on such algorithmic challenges related to the energy transition and railway transportation.

Bob Huisman is manager of the R&D Hub Logistics group at the railway operating company NS, responsible for research and development dedicated to solving challenging logistic problems. His team works closely together with universities to develop algorithms which are implemented in software products. Huisman is one the Principal Investigators of the ROBUST AI program and chair of its User’s Committee.

Kickstart.ai
Kickstart.ai is a collaborative effort from four Dutch companies to stimulate and foster a thriving AI Community. With the Nederlandse Spoorwegen as one of their partners, Kickstart.ai aims to improve society through AI. They builds bridges between data science savvy companies, academia, and talented ‘outsiders,’ e.g., at startups. By creating and nurturing a comprehensive data science community, Kickstart AI aims to effectively consolidate and enhance the intellectual prowess of the entire field and grant society easy access to the data science wisdom of the crowd. Kickstart AI connects and engages AI professionals and initiates collaborations that benefit everyone.

Meet up Goal
This Meet Up group is set up to showcase the Artificial Intelligence (AI) ecosystem of Delft and Zuid-Holland, to inspire students and the surrounding area, and to give academia and industry a place to network.

The Meet Ups are a monthly event, where each time a new AI issue is put to the test. So keep an eye on the agenda!
